With a view to address the challenges in the field of cloud computing and intelligent systems, and also to brainstorm latest developments in the field, the German University of Technology in Oman (GUtech) recently hosted a two-day international conference on the theory and applications of cloud computing, bringing together pioneering international researchers and developers.
The conference was held under the patronage of HE Dr Ali bin Masoud bin Ali al Sunaidy, the Minister of Commerce and Industry. Of the 20 papers submitted to the conference, the best six were selected for presentation, and these will be published in the Springer LNCS series, a GUtech spokesperson said. Dr Amer bin Awadh al- Rawas, CEO Omantel, delivered the first keynote address on the opening day on facilitating innovation in ICT (Information and Communication Technology).
Among the other keynote speakers, Yaqoob al Balushi, Deputy CEO of ITA, elaborated ITA’s cloud initiative in Oman, while Dr Mohamed M Hefeeda of the Qatar Computing Research Institute spoke about making cloud computing a utility. Dr Kiarash Kiazand, CIO of Huawei Middle East, discussed the components of cloud based services, and Dr Bader al Manthari, the Acting Director General of ITA spoke on cloud security.
Dr Omer Rana of Cardiff University dwelt on research and development challenges for intelligent clouds. There were also sessions on resource management and energy, and security, and also a panel discussion chaired by Dr Omer Rana and Dr Zakaria Mamar of Zayed University. Dr Hefeeda, Dr Kiazand, and Dr Rawas were the panel members.
The conference, chaired by Dr Asma al Saidi of Sultan Qaboos University and Dr Rudolf Fleischer of GUtech, was sponsored by Omantel, ITA, TRC and Springer Verlag.
